Essential Colour Combinations for Landscape Painting

Sky (clear day)

Cerulean Blue + touches of Ultramarine

Cerulean gives transparency; Ultramarine adds depth at the horizon

Distant hills

Ultramarine + Burnt Sienna + Cerulean

Creates soft, cooler greens that recede into the distance

Mid-ground vegetation

Cadmium Yellow + Ultramarine Blue

A warm, natural green. Add more blue for cooler variations

Foreground grass

Cadmium Yellow + Viridian or Raw Sienna + Ultramarine

Warmer and more saturated. Viridian for brightness, Sienna for earthiness

Tree shadows

Alizarin Crimson + Ultramarine + touch of Yellow

Avoids flat black. Creates natural shadow greens and warm greys

Soil and earth

Raw Sienna + Ultramarine or Burnt Sienna + Cadmium Yellow

First gives cooler browns; second gives warmer, richer tones
